Hi, I’m Maria.
And I’m Candace.
We are both registered dental hygienists at Dentistry at East Piedmont.

Today, we’re going to talk about something that affects many adults but often goes unnoticed until it becomes a serious issue—periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease.

Periodontal disease starts with bacterial growth in your mouth and may end, if not properly treated, with tooth loss due to the destruction of the tissue that surrounds your teeth. It’s not just about your gums—it’s about maintaining the foundation for your overall dental health.

Let’s start with the symptoms:

  • Swollen, red, and tender gums that bleed easily, especially when you brush your teeth or floss.

  • Bad breath that doesn’t go away is also a very common sign.

These symptoms are often caused by plaque buildup—that sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. When plaque isn’t removed, it can harden into tartar, which is more difficult to clean and further irritates the gumline.

Over time, this irritation leads to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected.

The good news is that periodontal disease is preventable and treatable. Regular dental checkups, proper brushing, and flossing are key.

If you’re experiencing any symptoms of gum disease—or if it’s been a while since your last dental visit—don’t wait. Contact us at Dentistry at East Piedmont to schedule an appointment. We’re here to help you keep your smile healthy and beautiful.
