Hi there, Dr. Ashish Patel to talk to you today about the six steps to choosing the right cosmetic dentist.
1. Understand What is Cosmetic Dentistry
Step one is understanding what is cosmetic dentistry. What is it that makes a smile beautiful, natural, and artistic? You know, do your homework. There’s so much information out there on the internet. Look at before and afters, kind of see what sets one dentist apart from another.
2. Know the Dentist and Their Experience
Continue your research on the dentist. Make sure the dentist has taken a lot of continued education to perfect their art of dentistry. Did you know that in the U.S. there is no specialty as cosmetic dentistry? Meaning, once you graduate from dental school, pretty much anyone can call themselves a cosmetic dentist. So do your homework, make sure that the dentist has sought out additional continued education as they continue to progress in their cosmetic field.
3. Dentist’s Portfolio
You want to see real patient cases. Most cosmetic dentists will take beautiful photography of their work, so make sure all the work that you’re seeing on the website is actually the dentist’s work.
4. Schedule a Complimentary Smile Consult
Step four is scheduling your cosmetic consult. Now in our office at Dentistry at East Piedmont, that consult is complimentary. It’s a 30 minute session just for you to kind of come in and talk about some of the options, get to meet the dentist and make sure that you’re comfortable with what you want to get done.
A comprehensive examination: During this exam, it’s about an hour and a half, you’ll spend your time with the doctor, he’ll go over each and every tooth looking for cavities, evaluating your bite, evaluating your TMJ joint, but more importantly, evaluating the aesthetic aspects of your smile. Meaning, which way do your teeth go, what do we want to achieve, what’s the end goal? We always start this appointment by really listening to what the patient wants to achieve.
5. Treatment Plan and Cost
Step five will be at the end of that appointment to determine the cost associated with your cosmetic dentistry. These costs will be clearly outlined in our office. Most of the cosmetic dentists will offer some sort of financing and we have a couple of companies that if you look under the facts section, under Patient Financing, you’ll see CareCredit and Lending Club. So take a moment to look at those.
6. Clear and Honest Communication
Number six, and this is probably the most important- have clear, open, honest expectations and communications with your doctor. Meaning, when you’re talking with your dentist, he wants to get you the smile that you want, just tell him what you’re looking for.
So I look forward to seeing you in our office for your complimentary consult, give our office a call at (770) 321-5558 as soon as you can.
