At Dentistry at East Piedmont, we’re really lucky to be able to offer Invisalign to our patients. We incorporate iTero technology, which means no impressions—it’s fully digital. It’s a scanner that allows us to scan your teeth and allows you to kind of get a before and after immediately to see what Invisalign can do.
Invisalign is like a clear tray that’s 3D printed. It’s all really super high-tech, and that tray—you change them out every two weeks—and it moves your teeth slowly into the position that we want. So it’s traditional braces without having to wear traditional braces. It really does provide a completely straight smile that a patient can have a lot more confidence in.
So a common question that people always ask me is, “How long do I got to wear the Invisalign trays?” Well, think about it this way: just like traditional braces that are pushing a tooth in one direction, the Invisalign tray is doing the same thing. If you take off the tray, the tooth wants to move back to where it was. So initially, when we get going on Invisalign, I tell patients they have to wear the trays for 23 hours a day. It’s really important to keep pushing the tooth in the direction that we want, and we’ve got to apply that force kind of constantly.
So with Invisalign, there are many advantages. Probably the biggest one is that you can’t see it when you’re wearing it, and it’s really super thin and super comfortable. But if you do want to brush your teeth, guess what—you can take them out, brush your teeth, and put them back in.
I’ve found that in our patients, if we’ve done Invisalign on them, it really doesn’t impact their personal life. We’ve had people that are on the radio that have even been able to wear them while they’re speaking on the radio. So Invisalign’s a great product and a great alternative to the traditional old metal brackets that we used to have.
