What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a process where you have a bacterial infection that starts to affect the foundation of your teeth, which is your bone, so you start to lose bone and your gums get red and puffy and swollen.
What Causes Gum Disease?
- An overabundance of bacteria.
- Not cleaning them and getting your teeth cleaned regularly by a professional, either hygienist or your dentist.
- Not removing that bacteria and plaque daily.
What Are the Treatment Options?
Well, gum disease can be treated several different ways. First, once we figure out that you do have gum disease, we can either clean you regularly or have a deep cleaning, which we use a little bit of anesthetic to keep you comfortable and go down under your gums and remove that excess bacteria in calculus and/or we can send you to a periodontist.
Can Gum Disease Recur?
Well, gum disease recurrence is quite common; it actually never goes away so one of the things that you need to do is you need to make sure you stay on top of your regular cleanings and your regular visits to a dental office. Flossing and brushing regularly, as well as regularly scheduled cleanings, will help keep gum disease at bay.
