Hi, my name is Candace.
And I’m Maria.
We are registered dental hygienists here at Dentistry at East Piedmont.

Today, I want to talk about modular therapy and how we use it to treat periodontal disease effectively. Periodontal disease is a common but serious condition where gums become inflamed, potentially affecting the bone that supports your teeth.

Modular therapy involves a step-by-step treatment approach that targets the disease at every stage.

The first step in this therapy is ultrasonic scaling. We use dental ultrasonic scalers to gently remove plaque, calculus, and bacteria from below the gumline—areas that you can’t reach with regular brushing and flossing. These tools use high-frequency vibrations along with warm water spray to safely dislodge deposits and flush out debris.

Your treatment might span one to three visits, depending on your specific needs. We also offer numbing solutions to ensure you are completely comfortable during the treatment.

After each session, we’ll provide you with a customized dental care kit to help you maintain your oral health at home. This is crucial for preventing the progression of periodontal disease and ensuring the health of your gums and teeth.

So Maria, this is your modular home care kit. This is going to set you up for success at home and maintain all the hard work that we did in the office today.

Inside, you’re going to find a Waterpik water flosser. You are going to use the Pik Pocket tip, which is included inside, and set it to pressure setting 2. You want to start out low and slow with this. You’ll fill the water tank reservoir with 200 mL of solution.

The first thing you’re going to use is the chlorhexidine, which is included inside your bag. That is a prescription-strength antimicrobial solution that will help to flush out bacteria below the gumline. You will trace the gumline of each tooth for roughly 5 seconds, aiming into the gingival pocket.

You will also use the chlorhexidine in the morning as a gargle—swish for roughly 30 seconds—and in the evening, you’ll apply it to the Waterpik. So, swish in the morning, Waterpik at night with the chlorhexidine.

Once the entire bottle of chlorhexidine is finished, you will switch over to the CloSYS rinse. CloSYS can be used every day. You will continue to use that—AM swishing for about 30 seconds, and then PM full-strength in the Waterpik flosser.
