At-Home Care After Periodontal Therapy

A step-by-step home routine for the days and weeks after periodontal therapy. Brushing, Waterpik, chlorhexidine rinse, maintenance rinse, Piksters, and your antibiotic if prescribed. Designed to give your gums the best chance to heal.

Quick reference

  • Healing depends on your home routine, not just the office visit. Stay consistent through all six steps below for the full four to six weeks.
  • The chlorhexidine rinse phase runs until all three bottles are finished. Then switch to the maintenance rinse on the same schedule.
  • Anything that feels off, like sharp pain, swelling that doesn't settle, or bleeding that doesn't quiet down, call us at (770) 321-5558. We would rather hear from you early than have you guess.

Your daily routine, step by step

  1. Brush Your Teeth

Morning, night, and after meals. If you're sensitive to strong flavors, a non-mint toothpaste is recommended. The gums are tender for the first few days; a milder option can be more comfortable.

  2. Waterpik

    • Use the Pik-Pocket Tip
    • Set pressure to 2
    • Fill the tank with 200 mL of solution
    • Aim gently into the gum line and trace along each tooth for five seconds
    • Once daily in the evening
  3. Chlorhexidine Rinse

You'll receive three 16 oz bottles. Use the rinse twice a day until all three bottles are finished, about four to six weeks for most patients.

    • Morning: swish, gargle, and spit for 30 seconds
    • Evening: use with the Waterpik for two minutes instead of plain solution
  4. Maintenance Rinse

Start after you finish the chlorhexidine. Same morning-and-evening schedule. Keeps gum health steady once the initial healing phase is past.

    • Morning: swish, gargle, and spit for 30 seconds
    • Evening: use with the Waterpik for two minutes
  5. Piksters

Daily, between teeth and along the gum line. These reach spaces a toothbrush can't, especially important after periodontal therapy when gum pockets are healing.

  6. Antibiotic

If we prescribed one, we'll call it in to your preferred pharmacy. Take it exactly as the label directs. Finish the full course even if your gums feel better before the antibiotic is done. Stopping antibiotics early is one of the most common reasons gum infections come back.

Hi, my name is Candis. And I'm Maria. We are registered dental hygienists here at Dentistry at East Piedmont.

Today, I want to talk about modular therapy and how we use it to treat periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a common but serious condition where the gums become inflamed, and the bone supporting your teeth can be affected.

Modular therapy is a step-by-step treatment approach that targets the disease at every stage.

The first step is ultrasonic scaling. We use dental ultrasonic scalers to gently remove plaque, calculus, and bacteria from below the gum line. These are areas you can't reach with regular brushing and flossing. The tools use high-frequency vibrations paired with a warm water spray to safely dislodge deposits and flush out debris.

Your treatment might span one to three visits, depending on your specific needs. We also offer numbing solutions to keep you completely comfortable during the treatment.

After each session, we'll provide a customized dental care kit so you can maintain your oral health at home. This is crucial for preventing the progression of periodontal disease and keeping the gums and teeth healthy.

Maria, this is your modular home care kit. It is going to set you up for success at home and maintain all the hard work we did in the office today.

Inside, you'll find a Waterpik water flosser. You are going to use the Pik-Pocket Tip, which is included inside, and set it to pressure 2. You want to start out low and slow. Fill the water tank reservoir with 200 mL of solution.

The first thing you'll use is the chlorhexidine, which is also included. It is a prescription-strength antimicrobial solution that helps flush bacteria from below the gum line. Trace the gum line of each tooth for roughly five seconds, aiming into the gingival pocket.

In the morning, use the chlorhexidine as a gargle and swish for roughly 30 seconds. In the evening, apply it to the Waterpik. Swish in the morning, Waterpik at night with the chlorhexidine.

Once the chlorhexidine is finished, switch to the CloSYS rinse. CloSYS can be used every day. Morning, swish for 30 seconds. Evening, full-strength in the Waterpik flosser.

We're here to help you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. Schedule your next appointment today.
